Around 900 years ago, in Vikram Samvat 1191 (Calendar year 1134), a king named “Jam Rata Raidhanji” was ruling the region of Kutchh. Raidhanji had four sons - Gheghaji, Gajanji, Hothiji and the youngest Kunwar Odhaji. Above all, Raidhanji's elder son, Gheghaji's residence was Tumbdi. Gheghaji was settled in the twelfth century, so it is assumed that the original Tumbdi was established then.
Hothi means the place of Shri Momaay
Mataji, a clan goddess of Kshatriyas. It is said that when Moma Santan of Kutch
was the head of the Jagir in 1565, the extent of the Jagir was up to Ashapura
Mataji's temple to the west of Nani Tumbdi village. In front of it, a small
lake was created by Khinyaroji during his time. Even today this lake is known
as Khinya Ram. Khinyaroji performed lotus worship in Samvat 1602 and was
succeeded by Kunwar Dhaluji as the head of the Jagir in Samvat 1603, and Oswal
Vania as his steward. It is estimated that the Jains came to Kutch in Samvat
1550.
From the history of Savla Nukh, it is known
that Jains have arrived in Tumbdi village three times in different ways. Due to
disagreements between Oswal and some Hothis on some issues, Oswal brothers
settled a new village near Tumbdi Jagir, thus our village Nani Tumbdi Toran was
built. Premjibhai Dharshi Sangoi records that this village was founded in
Samvat 1710 by Parekh and Bhedao, then came Malshi and Maiosha of Baua Nukh who
today live in Patel Faliya as Malsiani family followed by Savla, Punshisha who
live in Mota Faliya. After that Satiya, Kheda etc. nukhs came and Navagam was
inhabited and came to be known as Nani Tumbdi.
When Barbhaya was ruling in Kutchh, Nani Tumbdi
had seven village Garas. In which the Garasiyas of the villages used to fall as
mentioned below. Jambudi, Nana Bandara, Big Bandara, Bigi Tumbi, Nani Tumbi,
Naredi, and Mulia were the garas of Emsat village. The reputation of Oshwal
Mahajan was high in the Raj of Barbhaya, the 'Ra' of Kutch who was tormenting
the people of Kutch at that time, to free it from the increased religious
activities, was freed by the Shah of Kutch Anjar, whose immortal saga is
written in golden letters in the history of Kutch. At that time, Jalukada in
Kutch Gangs were looting villages, damaging property, one such gang in our
village took the help of Jogeshwar Dada, for protection as the steward of the
jagir, the Jadejas settled in Nani Tumbdi in Samvat 1803. In Samvat 1832, with
the consent of the Garasiya of Big Tumbdi, the temple of 'Momai Mataji' was
established in the middle of Nani Tumbdi. In course of time Shri Tejmalji
Champaji, the Garasdar of Nana Bandar, handed over his share of Garas to the
Maharao of Kutch, and since then Nana Tumbi became popular with Ra'wali Tumbi.
In this small village of ours, there have
been many people who have made big names in the society and through their
reputation the name of the village has become famous. Sanghvi Shamji Bhawanji's
name is still famous throughout Kutch. He was the headman (Patel) of Baavan
village of the Kanthi division of the Kutchhi caste. He became the first
Sanghpati of Kutchh from Tumbdi to Palitana chhari paalit sangh. Apart from
this, the Sangh of Panch Tithi of Kutch was also organised. Even today 'Shamji
Patelwali Tumbdi' is famous.
Jyotsnaben Momaya Shah, the first lady doctor of Kutchhi Samaj – is from Tumbdi. She was the pride of the village as a doctor who brought Gandhiji's ideals & principles to life, a simple life - thus serving the public, a supporter of the poor & needy people.
